L'Alpe d'Huez resort
Located due south at an altitude of 1860 m, l'Alpe d'Huez enjoys exceptional sunshine. Make the most of your ski days in the sun, with up to 7.30 hours of sunshine in December and up to 11 hours in April. According to Météo France, the resort enjoys an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. On a clear day, you can even see ⅕ of France from the Pic Blanc!
A combining example of tradition and ecology...
In summer, l'Alpe d'Huez transforms into a vast alpine pasture. On its lush slopes, cows graze peacefully, unfazed by the constant flow of cyclists, hikers, and trail runners. The alpine pasture of Huez, truly unique, perfectly embodies the harmonious coexistence of these various activities. Indeed, l'Alpe d'Huez is considered "a town in the mountains", where the preservation of its traditions has two main reasons.
The first reason is historical: Huizats (the name given to the residents of the resort) have historically grazed their herds in these alpine pastures, giving the resort its name: the "Alpe" of the village of Huez (The French word for alpine pasture being "alpage").
The second reason is practical, blending tradition, ecology, and technical prowess; the herds play a role in "grazing" to restore the ski area. By trimming the wild grass, they prevent the accumulation of vegetation that can lead to avalanches during the first snowfall!
